Luftschiff Hindenburg

A symbol, a trope, a hallmark, a cliché – call it by any other name, the airship is inseparable from Dieselpunk.* And from Alternative History, too.

Например, о своем полете в Южную Америку на цеппелине летом тридцать седьмого года. Тридцать седьмого? Летом?.. «Не сомневайтесь, барышня, у меня даже билет сохранился. Загляните в гости, покажу и билет, и фотографии. Немногие тогда могли позволить себе такое путешествие...»
I really had to listen to the Colonel. There was at least one good reason: he shared not only Great War memories. For instance, he told me about his flight to South America - onboard a Zeppelin, in Summer '37. Thirty seven? Summer, you say?.. "No doubt, young lady, I preserved the ticket. Come to my place, I'll show it to you, and photographs from the trip, too. Only a few could allow themselves such a journey ... "

Седьмого мая, в пятницу, я вернулся из института довольно поздно и включил радио. Передавали «Новости со всего света» – помните такую программу?
– Конечно, помню. Я ее очень любил – целый час новостей, и ни слова о политике.
– Да-да. Путешествия, изобретения, рекорды и курьезы. Но в тот вечер они передали одну очень важную новость – дирижабль «Гинденбург», несмотря на плохую погоду, благополучно совершил посадку в Лейкхерсте, принял на борт новый комплект состоятельных пассажиров и уже отправился в обратный путь...
On May 7th, it was Friday, I came home from the Institute rather late and turned on the radio. News From Around the Globe was on air - do you remember it?
- Sure I do. I loved the program, 60 pleasant minutes, not a single word about politics.
- Right. Travel, invention, world records, and off-beat news. But that night, they broadcasted something really important: the Hindenburg safely performed her mooring at Lakehurst, despite bad weather. She took a new set of wealthy passengers and set off on a new journey ...
